Portola Valley is an incorporated town in San Mateo County, California which was founded back in 1964. A survey by the American community shows that Portola Valley is the wealthiest town in America in terms of per capita income for communities more than 4,000. The area as well is one of the highest in terms of home prices. Portola Valley got its name from a Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portola, who was the leader of the first European party to the San Francisco peninsula. The town is located on the eastern slope of the Peninsula Coastal Range of Santa Cruz Mountains. Portola Valley is home to the Windy Hill Open Space Preserve located on its southwest side while on the north is the Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve. Most of the town is surrounded by wooden hills with some open plains.The town is home to some excellent public schools which have led to a more educated population than most neighboring cities and the town is located just west of Stanford University. With an extensive trail system, open space, scenic roads, and natural views, Portola Valley gives a unique feeling of existence. Food lovers in the city have a variety of restaurants to choose from, some of which are; Portola Kitchen, Parkside Grille and the Old Port Lobster Shack.The zip code which covers the whole of Portola Valley has the country’s 31st most expensive housing prices according to Forbes Magazine 2010.
